About Chikankari

Chikankari is the centuries-old hand embroidery art that Lucknow gifted to the world — and it is the reason Route Crafts exists.

It is worked entirely by hand. Fine thread is drawn through soft, breathable fabric to build motifs that sit lightly on the cloth, so a Chikankari piece stays airy enough for an Indian summer while carrying the weight of generations of craft.

Why it takes so long

There is no machine shortcut. Every delicate stitch, every intricate thread, and every motif is placed by a person — which is why a single garment can occupy an artisan for days. That patience is not an inefficiency to be engineered away. It is the product.

Passed down, not taught

The craft moves through families rather than classrooms. The artisans we work with inherited it across generations, learning by sitting beside someone who already knew — which is why Lucknow, and not anywhere else, is where this work comes from.

How to recognise real Chikankari

• The reverse of the fabric is as considered as the front — hand work leaves a different trace than machine embroidery.
• Small irregularities between motifs. Two hand-made pieces are never identical, and that is the signature, not a flaw.
• The fabric stays soft and breathable; the embroidery does not stiffen the cloth.
